Why Open A Credit Union Account Online?
At Greater Texas | Aggieland Credit Union, we provide our members with numerous benefits that might not be available from most other institutions.
A few of our more outstanding benefits include:
Lower fees
Credit unions are known for having lower fees than banks since they operate as not for profits. This means with Greater Texas | Aggieland Credit Union, you get fewer fees than you’d have with commercial banks, and the fees we do have tend to be lower.
For instance, we offer totally free checking that has no monthly costs and minimal ATM fees. You don’t even need a minimum balance—just an initial deposit of $25 is all that’s required.
Better rates
In addition to low fees, we’ll offer highly favorable rates. Most of the gains credit unions make tend to go toward the benefit of their members rather than maintaining expansive networks of branches, advertising, etc.
The end result is higher interest rates on savings, IRAs, and other accounts and lower rates on loans. We strive to provide our members with exceptional rates on their accounts. Over time, those rates will translate into better financial benefits for you than what you’d get at other institutions.
Focus on community
Perhaps the greatest benefit afforded by opening a credit union account with us is our focus on community. Credit unions are built around specific communities with individual members sharing in their ownership.
Customer service is more personable—literally. You won’t have to deal with a machine when you call with a question, and we make sure we take care of our members.
Already Have An Account Elsewhere? Switch Accounts Online!
But what if you already have an account at another institution? What then?
It’s actually quite easy to switch over to Greater Texas | Aggieland Credit Union. You can even get things started online. If you have any questions, we’ll walk you through the process and provide you any forms you may need to make the transition over.
That said, it is a process, especially if you were using services such as bill pay or automatic deposits. Ensure that you give it the time it takes to sort everything out.
Opening Or Switching Accounts Is Easy
Opening a new credit union account online with Greater Texas | Aggieland Credit Union is simple. Just establish your membership (also done online), supply the needed identification information, fill out the forms, make your initial deposit, and you’re good to go.
If you’re transferring over from another institution, you’ll want to hold off on closing your old account until you establish your new one.
Follow these steps:
Set up a new credit union account online
The first step is to set up your new account and get some funds transferred over.
Again, this is easily done online.
To set up your account you’ll need:
Two (2) of the forms of valid ID listed below.
- Driver's License
- U.S. Passport
- Social Security Card
- State/Federal Government Issued Identification
- University Photo ID
You will also be asked to provide:
- U.S. Social Security Number
- U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien Status
- External account information if funding from an external account.
As we process your application for membership, we may ask for further information to verify your identity and to take the steps necessary to protect against Identity theft or account fraud.
Set up automatic payments and deposits
Next, you want to swap all automatic payments, direct deposit, and other automated transfers over to your new credit union account.
To change direct deposit, just talk to your employer and get the needed paperwork from them. Odds are, it won’t be very extensive, but you will need to provide account information such as account number and routing number, so make sure you have that on hand. Our routing number is 314977337.
For automatic bill payments, check with each company currently providing you service.
These might include:
- Electric
- Water
- Phone companies
- Internet
- Television
- Landlord (if you’re currently renting)
- Mortgage
- Credit Card
- Student Loans
Get automatic bill payments switched over to your new credit union account, and confirm you have enough funds in that account to handle them.
Change financial information in online accounts
Various websites, such as PayPal, Amazon, or eBay, should be set up to work with your new financial account and payment information. Go through each one and make sure you update everything.
Ensure everything is working properly
Once you have bill pay, direct deposit, and everything else set up, take a few weeks to monitor your accounts. If something’s still drawing on your old account, get that corrected as quickly as possible.
Transfer remaining funds over and close your old account
Once you’re certain your funds are going where they’re supposed to, go to your old institution, withdraw the remainder of your funds, and close your account.
Be aware that some institutions charge a fee to close an account, so be ready to make that payment if necessary.
